Search Engines Should Become Government Spies, Says EU Parliament
Ixquick and Startpage will fight “Big Brother” data retention clause in
Declaration 29

(Brussels / New York / Zeist June 28, 2010) A draconian proposal to
retain all Internet search traffic, known as “Written Declaration 29,”
was adopted by the European Parliament last week. Framed as a measure to
crack down on paedophiles, the controversial Declaration calls on the EU
to require that search engines store all search traffic for up to two
years for possible analysis by authorities.

Search engine Ixquick (www.ixquick.com), widely regarded as the world’s
most private search engine, has built a strong privacy reputation by
storing no search data on its users. The company believes it has been
singled out by the data retention proposal, and it has vowed to strongly
oppose the measure becoming law.

“Since Google, Yahoo, and Bing already retain users’ search data, this
proposal is clearly aimed at Ixquick and our English-language subsidiary
Startpage (www.startpage.com),” said Robert Beens, CEO of Ixquick. “We
have worked hard to create a privacy-friendly search engine that
embodies the spirit of EU Privacy Protections, in line with the strict
recommendations of the EU Article 29 Data Protection Working Party. This
Declaration is evidence that the left hand of the EU does not know what
the right hand is doing.”

Mr. Beens fears that if the measure becomes law, it will vastly
undermine the privacy of over 500 million law-abiding EU citizens.
Storing everyone’s search data, rather than restricting surveillance to
known or suspected offenders, would give the government access to a rich
trove of political, medical, professional, and personal data on
virtually every person in Europe. And critics say it will do little to
stop child pornography.

“Sex offenders exchange files through underground networks. They don’t
find this stuff through search engines,” said Alex Hanff of Privacy
International, an advocacy group that is launching a campaign against
the measure. “I spent eight years helping law enforcement track down
online sex offenders and never once did we see a case where search
engine data was useful.”

Ixquick will join the public campaign started by Privacy International
to stop the provisions of Written Declaration 29 from becoming law.

“Privacy is a fundamental right and the basis of a free society. The
phenomenal success of Ixquick and Startpage proves that people don’t
want to be watched by their governments,” said Mr. Beens. “Spying on
law-abiding citizens is not the way forward, and we will stand by our
principles to protect the public’s ability to search in privacy.”

About Startpage and Ixquick
Startpage is the English-language version of Ixquick, an international,
award-winning search engine with an industry-leading privacy policy.
Launched in 1998, Ixquick is owned by Surfboard Holding BV, a Dutch
company. Ixquick has been awarded the EU Privacy Seal by the independent
certification authority Europrise. Further information can be found at

A weekly column June 14, 2010: Authoritarianism is Bad for Your Health

The administration’s terrible healthcare reform bill is now law, but the debate over how– and whether– the federal government should be involved in providing healthcare services is not over. It is not too late for America to correct its course and stop the march toward a government run, “single payer” healthcare system. Polls show that a large majority of Americans don’t want Obamacare. Congress should seize the opportunity to repeal the very worst aspect of this new legislation, namely the mandate that forces every American either to purchase health insurance or face an IRS penalty. This mandate represents nothing …

Today in the Chattanooga Times/Free Press, in an attempt to wiggle out of
the State’s FORCED insurance policy, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey said “People
don’t have to drive.”

This came as a result of the vote to try to get out of being FORCED to
buy health care insurance. Pressures are coming on the politicians in
Nashville who FORCED the public to buy car insurance, after a history of
liberty from such FORCE, unheard of in the annals of our country.

Now the Federal government is attempting through the ‘health care bill’
to FORCE Americans to buy health insurance and moreover, if they can’t
afford it, to SUBSIDIZE the FORCED ones with money to enable them to be
in the Insurance Commune.

This puts the State in a precarious position since, with the help of my
own Rep. Jim Vincent, the State passed a law requiring one to have car
insurance. The question has arisen lately as to whether it is
Constitutional to FORCE people to buy ANYTHING.

Thus the devilish and cruel explanation offered by the Lt. Governor, that
“you don’t have to drive.” Oh yeah, Governor, let’s see you and all your
compromisers, from Ramsey to Wamp to Haslam – I want to see you have to
beg for rides or walk everywhere you go. For at least 13 years.

And by the way, if Washington does comes down with their health care
FORCE, all they have to do is threaten to take away your GRANTS! 42 USC
666, 1996 and a multitude of other tyrannical edicts. The latest of which
is to FORCE Rhea County to replace all their road signs or lose their
gasoline taxes. To say nothing of the GREEN FORCES who make you abandon
your vehicle because it doesn’t comply with the emission controls, or how
about the FORCED seat belt usage or the FORCED baby-seat MANDATES which
is the name of “Safety” has enriched the licentious merchants who sell
such things through their mandated economy! And if you don’t do these
things we are FORCING you to do, we will take away your Grant! What kind
of people are these who have no more integrity than to refuse such mafia
tactics!

Sorry to say, this Independent is the only one who has the integrity to
say to the Federal Government, I will stand by the Tennessee Declaration
of Rights which is the sister to the national Bill of Rights.

“The doctrine of non-resistance to arbitrary power is abusive, slavish
and absurd.” Art. I. Sect. 2.

And by the way, Governor, walking is not crowded!

June Griffin (423) 775-0774
For God and Country
Independent Candidate for Governor of Tennessee, November 2, 2010

This speech was delivered near the imperial capital on October 6, 1996.The modern institution of the presidency is the primary political evil Americans face, and the cause of nearly all our woes. It squanders the national wealth and starts unjust wars against foreign peoples that have never done us any harm. It wrecks our families, tramples on our rights, invades our communities, and spies on our bank accounts. It skews the culture toward decadence and trash. It tells lie after lie. Teachers used to tell school kids that anyone can be president. This is like saying anyone can go to Hell. It’s not an inspiration; it’s a threat.
